“Prior to the Body Remedy residency, I didn’t call myself an artist. Now, I work and tour as a music artist.”

Mission

Image from our forming ecology 2025.

Starting from inside Scotland's creative sector, Body Remedy resources Black and Brown women and gender-variant artists through enriched and generative conditions.

We do this through offering development opportunities like residencies, experimental workshops and time-expanded fellowships that centre the body as a site of knowledge, care and creative sustainability.

Here, you can learn more about our aims as an organisation and our reciprocal impacts.

Artists

  • Centre those who are systemically made marginal or decorative

Give Black and Brown women and gender-variant artists the time, space and resources to develop their practice by embedding creation with intersectionally informed care.

  • Affirm practices and empower self-authorship

Identify, affirm and resource creative practices, supporting artists to define themselves on their own terms and to be taken seriously in their work.

  • Fulfillment and enrichment

Develop agile frameworks to support artists at all stages of their career trajectory [from emerging, early- late], to tailor specific resources proportionately to circumstances and desires for their practice.

  • Resources are relationships

Sustain artists by facilitating lasting relationships and connecting practices to broader contexts, empowering the manifold ways artists can be sustained creatively and financially by their work.

  • Comparison as insight

Provide a quality standard of institutional support particularly for emerging and early career artists.

  • Conditions are significant

Offer creative development containers: residencies, workshops and fellowships, that allow for embodiment and deep reflection.

  • Clarifying the context and witnessing the lived experience

We do not disavow or diminish the structural reality of inequitable systems. We see how they foreclose our capacities to see possibilities for our creative careers.

  • Dreaming as a strategic function for the possibility to challenge imposed limitations

Support artists to build their capacity to shape their artistic futures with vision, strategy and rigour. We do not separate the dream from strategic rigour, they are both necessary and inform the design of the process.

“For the time that Body Remedy has been around, I have seen how much it has positively impacted the different communities of colour that exist and reside in Glasgow.

By being supported by a Black and PoC organisation, you feel seen, especially within western society, where many tend to fail to pay attention to Black women and women of colour, be it through their art, work, or daily lives.”

Arts Workers

  • Value the cultural labour of producers, facilitators and researchers as creative work, integral, when held with intersectional ethics, to the creative and professional possibilities of others.

  • Model working conditions where collaborative relationships and intentional structures support producers, who in turn support artists.

  • Cultivate a culture where skills and knowledge circulate and are affirmed as learned expertise, essential to the impact and lived values of an organisation and its community.

Organisation

  • Form reciprocal partnerships built on shared resources.

  • Recognise ‘process’ as fundamental to the quality of creative labour.

  • Design adaptable models to support lead producing development and managing project strands across all stages of a programme

  • Seed and develop international exchange that connects Scotland-based practice to diasporic cultural networks.

Sector

  • Transform the standard of how Black and Brown practitioners are supported toward creative connections, facilitated strategic support and self-authorisation.

  • Generate and share knowledge about care, sustainability and equity in cultural work.

  • Show that body-centred, care-led models are a viable, not idealistic, way to run an organisation.

“I would highly recommend Body Remedy CIC to other artists as they also cater to a wide range of artistic practices and are able to hold space for many working styles, have an incredible programme of workshops and events over the time they've been operating.”
